Press Release: Strengthening Regional Integration in SADC – A Public Lecture by H.E. Benjamin William Mkapa

An integrated Africa has been the goal of African leaders since the attainment of independence more than 50 years ago. Arguments for speeding up the integration process have been advanced, and it is generally agreed that integration would be politically and economically beneficial for Africa. The challenge has been how to make this vision a reality.

H.E. Benjamin William Mkapa, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania is set to deliver a keynote address at the Public Lecture on “Deepening Integration in SADC:Achievements, Challenges and Opportunities

The Lecture will be held on 15th August, 2019 at the Library Auditorium, University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from 09:00 hours to 12:00 hours. Following the keynote address, the lecture will feature a panel discussion involving H.E. Benjamin Mkapa; H.E. Dr. Simba Makoni, former Executive Secretary of SADC; Prof. Anthoni van Nieuwkerk, Security Studies Coordinator at the Wits School of Governance, South Africa; and Mr. Gilead Teri, Program Lead for Tanzania Investment Climate, World Bank Group. 

Jointly organised by the Southern African Development Community (SADC),the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, UONGOZI Institute and University of Dar es Salaam, the Lecture aims to stimulate discussion on regional integration, especially as it relates to the SADC.

The Lecture will discuss key achievements in the SADC integration process; opportunities from deepening integration; challenges hindering the deepening of integration and ways to overcome them; and lessons from other regional blocks for speeding up realisation of SADC objectives.

The event will bring together leaders from the SADC, government, political parties, diplomatic missions, business, civil society and academia. It is also open to the public.
